The Principality of Asturias, located in northern Spain, covers a 10,604 km2 (6589.02 square miles) area. While the Bay of Biscay bathes the region’s 334 km (213.75 mile) coastline, the Cantabrian Mountains separate it from Castilla y León. Due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, the climate of Asturias is humid and temperate, which makes the temperatures milder in summer and moderates the harsh winter. The nature of Asturias has been an inseparable part of its history. Its green landscape, the steep mountains, and the turbulent sea have left this ancient Kingdom unaltered in its customs, culture, and legends. No doubt, it is a natural paradise.
Natural Parks are Asturias greatest pride. For their conservation and study, the Red Regional de Espacios Naturales Protegidos (Regional Network of Protected Natural Areas) has been created. These small paradises are classified as Biosphere Reserve, National Parks, Natural Parks, Natural Reserves, Protected Landscapes, and Natural Monuments. These areas include fine sand beaches, hidden caves, crystal-clear rivers and flora and fauna native to the region.
However, Asturias combines history and modernism, technology and respect for the environment. Thus, the Principality has 5,000 Kms (3106 miles) of roads, highways, and expressways, two commercial ports and an international airport. Broadband in Asturias is an unquestionable reality. The use of broadband currently exceeds the Spanish average by almost 15 %, and in the e-Asturias 2007 Strategic Plan, the extension of broadband connection covers the entire territory.
