Population
The Principality of Asturias is home to 1,076,635 people (according to the 2007 census), of which 52 % are women and 48 % men. The region has an average density of 101.3 inhabitants per km2. 80 % of population is based in the main metropolitan area, where the most important cities are (Oviedo, Gijón, Avilés, Mieres and Langreo), while in the east and west areas, rural and tourist activities prevail.
By the end of 2007, Asturias had an active population of 476.300 people; of these 437.600 were employed, which translates into a 8.1 % unemployment rate. The highest employment levels are concentrated in the service sector, followed by industry and construction.
