The Principality of Asturias, located in northern Spain, covers a 10,604 km2 (6589.02 square miles) area. While the Bay of Biscay bathes the region’s 334 km (213.75 mile) coastline, the Cantabrian Mountains separate it from Castilla y León. Due to the influence of the Atlantic Ocean, the climate of Asturias is humid and temperate, which makes the temperatures milder in summer and moderates the harsh winter. The nature of Asturias has been an inseparable part of its history. Its green landscape, the steep mountains, and the turbulent sea have left this ancient Kingdom unaltered in its customs, culture, and legends. No doubt, it is a natural paradise.
The Natural Areas of Asturias are its biggest pride. For their conservation and study the Regional Network of Protected Natural Areas(RRENP) was created These small paradises are classified into Biosphere Reserves , National Parks, Natural Parks, Natural Reserves, Protected Landscapes and, Natural Monuments. Those areas are supplemented with the white fine sandy beaches, the remote secret caves, the crystalline rivers and their native fauna and flora.
But Asturias combines history and modernity, technology and respect to the environment. In this way, the Principality possess 5.000 Kms of highways, railways and motorways, two industrial ports and an international airport. The broad band in Asturias is an unquestionable reality. At the moment the use of broad band exceeds the Spanish average by almost 15% and in the strategic Plan e-Asturias 2007 the extension of conectivity of broad band is included to the whole territory.
